Assumptions
- England taxpayer for 2026/27.
- Personal Allowance reduced by £1 for every £2 of adjusted net income over £100,000.
- Allowances are set against earnings first, then savings, then dividends.
- Does not include Marriage Allowance, tax reliefs on losses, or foreign income.
How this was calculated
Personal Allowance = £12,570 − ½ × max(0, adjusted net income − £100,000) Taxable income = total income − Personal Allowance Income Tax = Σ (income in each band × band rate)
| Band (England, Wales, NI) | Rate |
|---|---|
| Personal Allowance: up to £12,570 | 0% |
| Basic rate: £12,571 to £50,270 | 20% |
| Higher rate: £50,271 to £125,140 | 40% |
| Additional rate: over £125,140 | 45% |
Welsh taxpayers pay the Welsh rates of Income Tax, currently set at the same overall rates as England. Scottish taxpayers use the Scottish bands for earnings.
Savings and dividends
Income is stacked: earnings and other income first, then savings, then dividends. Savings can use the £5,000 starting rate band (if other taxable income is low) and the Personal Savings Allowance (£1,000 basic, £500 higher, £0 additional rate). Dividends get a £500 allowance, then 10.75%, 35.75% or 39.35%. Allowance-covered income still uses up band space.
Worked example
On £60,000 of salary: £60,000 − £12,570 = £47,430 taxable. £37,700 × 20% = £7,540, plus £9,730 × 40% = £3,892. Total: £11,432.
On £110,000 the allowance falls to £7,570, so tax is £33,432.
