Assumptions
- 37.5 hours over 5 days a week, 52 paid weeks a year.
- Paid holiday counts as paid time. Overtime, bank holidays paid at premium rates and allowances are not included.
- Figures are gross (before tax). Use the Take Home Pay calculator for net pay.
How this was calculated
paid weeks = 52 β unpaid weeks annual = hourly Γ hours per week Γ paid weeks monthly = annual Γ· 12 weekly = annual Γ· paid weeks daily = annual Γ· (days per week Γ paid weeks)
Employees in the UK are entitled to 5.6 weeks of paid holiday, so a permanent salary normally covers all 52 weeks. Contractors and zero-hours workers are often not paid for holidays or gaps between assignments β enter those as unpaid weeks so the annual figure is realistic.
Worked example
Β£15 an hour Γ 37.5 hours Γ 52 weeks = Β£29,250 a year (Β£2,438 a month). With 4 unpaid weeks it falls to Β£27,000.
