Assumptions

  • Thresholds are the 2026/27 values. Payroll deductions are rounded down to whole pounds each pay period.
  • Undergraduate and Postgraduate Loan repayments are calculated separately and added together.
  • Repayment income is pay before tax (after any salary sacrifice). Self Assessment customers also include unearned income over £2,000.
  • If you have more than one undergraduate plan, payroll uses the lowest threshold and HMRC allocates repayments — not modelled.

How this was calculated

Student loan repayment thresholds 2026/27
Plan (2026/27)Threshold & rate
Plan 1£26,900 a year · 9%
Plan 2£29,385 a year · 9%
Plan 4 (Scotland)£33,795 a year · 9%
Plan 5£25,000 a year · 9%
Postgraduate Loan£21,000 a year · 6%
repayment = rate × max(0, income − threshold)
Postgraduate Loan is added separately if you have one.

Payroll uses period thresholds — for Plan 2 that is £2,448 a month or £565 a week — and rounds each deduction down to the nearest pound. Repayments stop when the loan is repaid or written off.

Worked example

On £35,000 with Plan 2: (£35,000 − £29,385) × 9% = £505.35 a year, about £42 a month.

Frequently asked questions

Which plan am I on?
Plan 1: English/Welsh students who started before September 2012, and Northern Ireland students. Plan 2: English/Welsh students from September 2012 to July 2023. Plan 4: Scottish students. Plan 5: English students starting from August 2023. Check your Student Loans Company account to be sure.
Do I repay if I earn under the threshold?
No. Nothing is deducted in a pay period where income is at or below the period threshold.
Can I have two student loan deductions?
Yes — an undergraduate plan and a Postgraduate Loan are repaid at the same time, 9% plus 6%. If you have two undergraduate plans, payroll deducts once using the lowest threshold.
Does salary sacrifice reduce student loan repayments?
Yes. Repayments are based on pay after salary sacrifice. Net-pay pension contributions do not reduce them.
